Paramour
(after ‘Silvis’ by Brian Kielt)

I self-medicate on fresh air.
It’s getting harder and harder
to find anything fresh out there.

I time my walks with the traffic,
when fumes can’t plug the road; the trick
is to think like an asthmatic.

I hide amidst the sycamores
where cragged shadows and shade allure,
my hushed, secret parador.

I stand here and dream of Autumn,
simple, leafless arboretum,
and pray that Winter never comes.

I simplify, though I cannot
for all my want of nothing’s lot
stand naked, still, and stop the rot.
